Adah Sharma talks about her roots @ The Times of India

  • "I'm a Tamil Brahmin. My father hailed from Madurai and my mom's a native from Nattupura, bordering Palakkad.
  • In our community, the father's first name becomes the surname," she says.
  • Her last name was originally spelt as Sarma, and Adah attributes the change in spelling to "years of living in Mumbai."
  • When talking about her roots,
  • Adah Sharma seems to be almost always met with surprise.
  • Even Bollywood folks from Mumbai find it amusing that she's a 'Palakkad Iyer', whose parents named her Adah.
  • "That is my original name!" says the actress.
  • And her last name also raises similar aspersions about her Tamil nativity among the discerning.
  • It doesn't seem to annoy her any more.
  • Her father, late Captain SL Sharma, worked in the merchant Navy and her mom is a classical dancer.
  • "I was born and raised in Mumbai. And since debuting in Bollywood,
  • playing a simple Gujarati girl-next-door in Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), people in Mumbai think I'm a gujju," says the actress.
  • And in Tollywood, people look at her as the "Mumbai import."
  • "only when I start speaking in Tamil or I'm dressed up in Indian attire do people seem to see the South Indian features in me," says Adah, who believes her love for South Indian food must be the last word on her nativity.
  • "Whenever I'm at home, I eat dosa, idli, sambar, rasam, avial and mologutal.
  • These dishes are like my staple food, I need them all the time, for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well. And it's easy to digest, as they are not very spicy. I hate spicy food," shares Adah.
  • "I'm not a great cook, but I can make avial, sambar and rasam, the basic things. And if anybody is interested in eating India's 'map', I can make dosa as well," adds Adah laughing.
  • Currently shooting with Aadi for the upcoming Telugu flick, Garam, she is also doing and a short film in Telugu, PVP.
  • What she's most excited about though is making her Tamil debut this year. Now, that will be a homecoming, indeed.
  • Let's see if the Tamil movie lovers can see as one of their own in Adah.
